A recent study reported by the National Sleep Foundation in the USA has presented new guidelines on what constitutes a good nights sleep. An expert panel of sleep researchers reviewed 320 studies reporting sleep duration findings for healthy individuals, also reviewing the effects of reduced or prolonged sleep duration and the health consequences of too much or too little sleep. Not much has changed in their guidelines for adults – we still need to aim for 7-9 hours sleep per night as regularly as possible. However, for other age groups, especially children, there is a wider range of ideal sleep duration, for example, for teenagers they suggest 8-10 hours as a healthy amount that will sustain them.
